The Republican Party is coming off historic election day victories just a month ago. Not only did they take back the United States Senate and increase their margin in the US House of Representatives, they took Governor's mansions in states where the GOP simply doesn't win.
It was a Republican tsunami.
With all that momentum surely the GOP would reign in President Obama and his "my way or the highway" approach so soundly rejected by the America electorate.
Not so fast.
Despite the overwhelming victory at the ballot box and multiple credible polls that show as many as 70% of Americans saying illegal aliens should be sent home and required to follow the law, the Republican Congress has once again rolled over for President Obama.
With great fanfare the President announced he would be exempting millions of individuals who's first act on American soil was to break the law from that very law. His magical "pen and phone" would change the law. Outrage burst forth from Republicans everywhere. How could the President ignore the wishes of the public? More importantly, how could he suspend the Constitution of the United States and implement law himself? Fist pounding abound...the GOP assured the public they wouldn't stand for such a clear violation of both the public trust and of the law. They wouldn't fund it. They would take it to court. They would shame the President into compliance with that pesky Constitution.
But what did they really do? Business as usual. The good news is they only funded the department of Homeland Security until February. The bad news is they gave gobs of cash for immigration programs to other federal agencies. The Department of Health and Human Services got $948 million for unaccompanied children. There was also $14 million for school districts to absorb new immigrant students and the State Department gets $260 million for Central American countries where the kids are coming from.
Let's review: Promise the public a fight against amnesty. Win election. Publicly crow about the outrage at Obama's flouting of the US Constitution. Then...fund it anyway.
It's no wonder America trusts no one in Washington.
